This folk poem is a rhythmic extract from the great oral epic of Lord Male Mahadeshwara, a revered Shaivite saint-deity of southern Karnataka. This poem is drawn from the massive oral epic of Lord Male Mahadeshwara, who resides in the misty hills of Male Mahadeshwara Betta. It centres on two young, innocent brothers from a poor tribal family, Karayya and Billayya, who are devoted disciples of the Lord.
The trials
To test the depth and purity of their devotion, Mahadeshwara subjects the brothers to miraculous, terrifying trials: a sudden apocalyptic storm with lightning and thunder; the turning of bright day into pitch darkness with roaring tigers and panthers blocking their path; and rivers overflowing with boiling water and deep whirlpools.
Fearless devotion and divine grace
Despite their youth, the brothers refuse to be terrified. They walk on through the dark forest chanting 'Linga Linga', and when faced with a roaring river they jump in without hesitation, declaring they would rather drown in his name than live without his darshan. Pleased by their fearless surrender, Mahadeshwara withdraws the trials, the storm clears, the river cools, the beasts bow, and manifests in his divine form to embrace and bless them, granting their names eternal remembrance alongside his own. The poem teaches that God needs no costly ritual; He is won by innocent, unadulterated love.
