The narrator recalls his childhood days with his grandfather and describes the large banyan tree near their home. Because of his curiosity and love of nature, the boy spends much of his time watching the creatures that live around the tree.
A small squirrel gradually becomes friendly with him. The boy feeds it and observes its movements. The tree also attracts many birds and other animals, turning it into a living world for the child.
The story reaches its most exciting moment when the boy witnesses a cobra and a mongoose confronting each other. The mongoose finally overcomes the cobra, showing the harsh but fascinating struggle of nature.
