Resigned to arrest, he walks toward the detective, but Ben Price, moved by Jimmy's real reformation, pretends not to know him and lets him go free.

The safecracker released
Jimmy Valentine, a talented safecracker with many influential friends, is pardoned and released early from prison. The warden urges him to reform, 'Stop breaking safes and live a better life', but Jimmy denies ever having cracked a safe. Soon after his release, three daring safe burglaries occur, unmistakably Jimmy's work, and the clever detective Ben Price takes up his trail.
Love and reformation
Arriving in the little town of Elmore, Jimmy sees Annabel Adams, the banker's daughter, and falls in love at first sight. For her sake he undergoes a real change: he settles down as 'Ralph Spencer', opens a successful shoe store, earns the respect of the town and the Adams family, and becomes engaged to Annabel.
His reform is genuine, he even decides to give away his precious set of burglar's tools to an old friend, symbolising his farewell to his criminal past.
The child in the vault
One day, at the Adams bank, Jimmy is with the family when a little girl, Agatha, is accidentally shut inside the bank's new, airtight vault, whose time lock has been set and cannot be opened. The child will suffocate, and everyone is helpless with panic.
Jimmy faces an agonising choice: to save the child he must use his safecracking skill, exposing his secret identity before Annabel, whom he loves. Without hesitation, he takes out his tools and, with astonishing speed, opens the vault and rescues Agatha, revealing that he is the notorious Jimmy Valentine.
The detective's mercy
Having saved the child, Jimmy quietly accepts that his secret is out. He walks toward the front of the bank, where the detective Ben Price is standing, ready to be arrested and to lose everything he has built.
But Ben Price, who has witnessed Jimmy's selfless act and genuine reformation, pretends not to recognise him: 'Guess you're mistaken, Mr. Spencer,' he says, and walks away, letting Jimmy go free. The story shows that true reform springs not from fear of punishment but from love and a changed heart, and that such goodness can awaken mercy even in the law.
