A reluctant beginning
The narrator begins as a child being taken to school by his father. He is dressed in new clothes but is unhappy because he sees school as a separation from the intimacy of home. His father reassures him that school is not a punishment but a place where children become useful people.
The school becomes a world of its own
At first the school looks like a huge, stern fortress. Once inside, however, the boy meets other children and gradually feels a sense of belonging. Games, music, language, geography, numbers, food, sleep, friendship and love become part of his experience.
The narrator later understands that life is not entirely sweet. Rivalry, pain, hatred, accidents, discipline and punishment are also part of the journey. The change from 'I' to 'we' shows his movement from isolation to participation in life.
A transformed world
At the end of the school day the narrator expects to meet his father, but he is not there. A middle-aged man approaches him and speaks as if they have met before. The narrator then realizes that he is old and that the man is someone he once knew.
The street has changed completely. Gardens and fields have disappeared, while high buildings, traffic, crowds, refuse and noise dominate the landscape. The narrator is shocked that such a transformation seems to have happened in only half a day.
Dependence and the meaning of the title
The story ends with a young boy offering to help the narrator cross the road. The opening and ending mirror each other: at the beginning the child holds his father's hand, while at the end the old man depends on a child. The title therefore suggests that an entire human life can pass as quickly as half a day.
