Life cannot be rehearsed
The poem begins with the assertion that nothing can ever happen twice. Human beings arrive in life without rehearsal and leave without a chance to practise it again. The humorous reference to repeating a school class reinforces the idea that life offers no second attempt at the same moment.
Every day and night is different
No day can exactly copy yesterday, and no two nights can create precisely the same happiness. Even intimate experiences such as kisses are never identical. The poem therefore emphasizes the individuality of every moment.
The fleeting nature of time
