Why Mumbai needs dabbawalas

Mumbai's high land prices keep many workers far from their workplaces. The city also attracts people from different parts of India with varied food habits. These conditions create a strong need for a reliable system that carries home-cooked meals to offices.

Origins and growth

The service began in 1890 when a Parsi woman in Dadar asked Mahadu Iwhaji Bacha to help carry a tiffin to her husband. From this modest beginning, the organisation developed into a large network serving a huge number of customers.

Precision and discipline

Dabbawalas collect meals in the morning and deliver them to offices by early afternoon. Tiffins carry alpha-numerical markings that identify the origin, changing points and delivery destination. Loaded trays are transferred at several points, requiring speed and accuracy.

The organisation trains workers to behave courteously and maintain discipline. White caps identify the workers, and rules are enforced through fines and removal from the association.

Reliability and recognition

Customers testify to the reliability of the service. The article presents the dabbawala system as a grassroots organisation whose operational efficiency has impressed international observers, including Prince Charles.
