The Loneliness of the Crowd

In the crowded, noisy streets of a metropolis, the narrator notices that even though millions walk side by side and share the same buses, there is an absolute, suffocating loneliness between them. Nobody knows their neighbours or has time to notice another's tears.

The story focuses on a poor, elderly migrant worker who has spent his life building the city's roads and carrying its loads, but who is now treated as a discarded, useless machine as he grows old and weak. Khwaja Ahmad Abbas uses this contrast to critique the capitalist urban setup: we have built grand cities and malls but destroyed our collective humanity, turning the 'fair of humans' into a desolate desert of souls.
