The story's prized possession is a beautiful, warm Kashmiri shawl belonging to a poor rural mother. For her it is not mere cloth but a symbol of her lost youth, self-respect and dreams; she preserves it with care, wrapping it in neem leaves, hoping to pass it to her daughter as a wedding gift.
During an exceptionally harsh winter, the ruthless landlord demands the shawl as feudal tribute to fund his own daughter's wedding. The mother begs and falls at their feet, but her pleas are met with cold threats. The shawl is forcibly snatched away, leaving her shivering. In a devastating final irony, as the landlord's daughter rides off wrapped in the stolen shawl, the poor mother collapses and dies of cold and a broken heart, Husaini exposing how the luxury of the rich is built on the blood and stolen dreams of the poor.
